“If it works here it works anywhere...”
Manuka Point is a stunning luxury hunting lodge, remotely situated in the Rakaia Valley of the Canterbury High Country. The lodge is kept warm even in harsh -15°C winters with Next Energy’s Geothermal Heating.
Installation during the winter months faced some unusual obstacles when the Rakaia river flooded necessitating other means of transporting materials.
When we were deciding on heating for Manuka Point our first priority was that it had to work at -15°C. I had initially written geothermal off as I thought it was going to be too expensive but Next Energy were competitive; the difference between geothermal and other more conventional heating wasn’t that bad. And when you look to the longer term it makes sense. I think having geothermal here is a real asset and has greatly added to the capital value of the lodge.
“For me the single biggest advantage is that it’s virtually maintenance free and I don’t need to do anything – I just leave it to heat the place. I get tremendous interest from the guests, they want to know how the place is heated, it’s so comfortable but with geothermal it has the added benefit of being invisible and silent.

“We found working with Next to be pretty seamless...”
Ryman Healthcare is one of New Zealand’s leading providers of Retirement Living options for New Zealanders over the age of 65; they are six-time winners of the Australasian Aged Care Awards for “Best Retirement Village in New Zealand.”
Ryman Healthcare operates 21 integrated retirement villages situated throughout NZ. The Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill includes a care facility with 157 rest home/hospital beds, 26 serviced apartments and 85 independent town houses.
Next Energy Ltd recommended Geothermal hot water heating as an option to help significantly reduce running costs for 20 of the serviced apartments; removing the need for a cylinder in each apartment. The 20 apartments are supplied by five Avenir Energie Domestic Hot Water (DHW) ground sourced heat pumps each supplying four apartments via their 310L storage cylinder. As part of the project, Next Energy assisted in applying for ECCA funding which was successful. The system is currently being monitored by ECCA with a view to making grants available for similar projects.
We found working with Next Energy to be pretty seamless, we have no complaints. We have noticed savings already with peak electricity loadings and our savings are set to continue into the future. I would recommend Next Energy, in fact I have had the DHW unit fitted in my own property .

I’d say that Next Energy have a big future ahead of them. For me Geothermal has been great in the colder climates, if it works here, it works anywhere.
