The market for Geothermal heating solutions can be widely segmented into residential and commercial. In NZ Geothermal is still very new and the market could be described as fledgling, however, Central Otago is one pocket of the country that is embracing Geothermal technology.
In New Zealand there is significant confusion about Geothermal heating, many are under the misconception that it relates to using heat from thermal hot springs and therefore only available to people in hot spring areas. Geothermal heating is available in most areas of the country, the main criteria is having access to an area of land that can be used for the captor field.
Globally the momentum of Geothermal installations is increasing with the biggest market by far being America where in March 2001 there were 450,000 geothermal heat pumps installed. In Europe Geothermal has been growing since the 1980’s with Sweden and Switzerland leading the way.
Not just for homes, the Geothermal solution is increasingly used in commercial environments and for public buildings as it has such long term cost saving advantages and is renewable. This penetration is only seen to grow, looking at the UK market, can give some indication of where things in NZ could be heading.
