Geothermal Heating Overview
Escalating Power and Gas Prices
Choosing the right heating system for heating your home and for providing hot water can be complex. What are the most efficient systems and what about the long term costs? The cost of many traditional forms of home heating like gas and electricity are continuing to rise, what may seem affordable now could become unaffordable in the not too distant future.
Environmental impact
And the environment is a growing concern for many of us, what can we do to help? What forms of renewable heating are there and are they right for my home?
Geothermal operates in harmony with the environment
Geothermal heating is a marvelous way to effectively heat your new home and provide it with uninterrupted domestic hot water with minimum impact on the environment.
Geothermal keeps working even when it’s cloudy
Like Solar, Geothermal uses the heat from the sun but unlike solar Geothermal keeps working regardless of the weather conditions, even if it’s a very cold or cloudy day. So Geothermal is a primary source of heating and doesn’t require boost elements when weather conditions are poor and when you need it most.

| Outdoor temperatures fluctuate widely with the seasons but underground temperatures do not. In winter, fluid circulating through captors buried in the ground absorb stored heat and carry it indoors to the Heat Exchanger. The Heat Exchanger, through a combination of compression and expansion transforms the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the building. The exchange process is highly energy efficient; each unit of electrical energy used will yield up to 5 units of heat energy. |
Tap into the Heat beneath your Feet
Geothermal harnesses the heat that is stored in the ground – latent heat that is constant, even if the temperature in the air outside is -5° C, a metre under ground the earth can still be warm at +10°C and this remains constant, year round, regardless of the weather. This latent heat is all around us, unused but accessible wherever we live in New Zealand and is constantly being replenished through heat from the sun and rain. These are free unlimited and available resources which will eventually replace fossil energies.
Next Energy Geothermal does not refer to the natural hot springs that are found around New Zealand. Next Energy Geothermal heating is the transfer of heat from within the ground, wherever you live, that’s why these systems have been keeping homes in the Swiss Alps warm for years!
Efficient, Energy Saving Solutions and more
Geothermal is one of the most cost-effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly methods of heating available and returns far higher efficiencies than traditional diesel and gas heating systems, without the damaging impact on the environment. And unlike other renewable solutions, such as solar it keeps working irrespective of the weather conditions. And from an architectural perspective Geothermal heating is hidden and unobtrusive.

Geothermal adds value
Geothermal systems add value to your property. If you were deciding to buy a new home and it came down to two properties that were exactly the same but one was heated with a Geothermal heating system and one was heated with a traditional gas powered central heating system – which one would you choose? You’d choose Geothermal and you’d make sure that if you sold that house in the future, the fact that it was Geothermally heated would be listed as a major selling point. Comparing the running and maintenance costs of gas powered heating, against geothermal you can see the difference is significant, and with the rising costs of fossil fuels and the growing concern for the environment Geothermal systems will continue to grow in popularity.
New Builds and Retro-fits
Please note that Next Geothermal Hot Water Heating can be fitted retrospectively into existing and new homes and buildings. Whereas Next Geothermal Home Heating is better suited for ‘new builds’ as it is the best time to consider the whole home heating requirements to maximize comfort and energy efficiency. At the planning stage our Technicians can provide valuable advice and guidance on how to ensure the Next Geothermal system operates to its full potential. Next Geothermal can positively affect design decisions and needs careful consideration, however, unlike Solar Panels; Geothermal is hidden and unobtrusive and won’t impact on the look of your new home.
Using an existing gas or diesel system
In most instances, Next Geothermal Home Heating systems can be connected up to an existing gas or diesel powered system.
