Geothermal or Ground Source Heat Pumps
The Captors feed into a Heat Exchanger or Generator, commonly referred to as a Ground Source Heat Pump or Geothermal Heat Pump, which uses a very small amount of mains electricity to convert the energy extracted from the soil into a form that can be used to heat the building or produce hot water for baths and showers etc. Models are available in different kW output to meet the varying needs of individual buildings.
Efficiencies of Ground Source Heat Pumps
Unlike air source heat pumps, the performance of Ground Source Heat Pumps is not affected as much when outside temperatures are low. The efficiency of a heat pump is measured by the coefficient of performance (COP). Higher COP’s are achievable if the ambient temperature is consistently higher which is why Ground Source Heat Pumps are more efficient as the temperature in the ground, unlike the temperature in the air, remains relatively constant regardless of the time of year.
